- When the Sky Paints -

/854-1279-thickbox/lockende-ferne.jpg

For me, the joy of travelling also means the joy of experience: seeing something new again and again, or experiencing the familiar in different ways. I don’t need to travel far for sunsets – they happen every day, all over the world. And yet none is ever the same. Each one is a unique spectacle of light and colour. I can simply enjoy a sunset. But the moment I begin to paint it, everything changes: with the first brushstroke, a race against time begins. That is why I only paint them when the moment feels right – out of joy and inner impulse. One could say: I paint them only for myself.

I simply love the spectacle in the sky, especially over the sea. As with travelling, painting is also about experience for me – about careful observation, about marvelling at what unfolds directly before my eyes. How does the sky colour itself today? How do the clouds glow in the last light? The sun transforms from lemon yellow to deep cinnabar red, briefly reflecting in the water. Fields of yellow light dance across the waves, sparkle, shimmer, flicker – and then suddenly disappear again. I love it when many clouds gather in the sky, but an empty, cleared sky feels particularly impressive to me. Spaces open up – in front of me, behind me, above me – and expand far beyond the horizon. Then it feels as if a great painter is at work up there, from whom I am allowed to learn. The fact that all of this can be explained physically does not bother me in the slightest. On the contrary: I enjoy this spectacle with every glance and every brushstroke.
