- Once Crete, Always Crete -

The desire to travel is contagious like a fever – unstoppable when you're young, adventures start right on your doorstep and the world is open to you. In the winter semester of 1977, it spread rapidly in my department at the Technical University of Berlin. One of our set had an idea that immediately got everyone excited: off to Crete! To a place where the meadows bloom in March, the sea tempts you to swim, and the mountains invite you to go hiking. A paradise for everyone – and a true Eldorado for us as history students. Our anticipation was boundless, and a lively flock of sparrows intoxicated by spring could hardly have been more excited than we were.

We took off from Berlin-Tegel, about thirty people, too many to be travelling as a group for long. Some of us got stuck in Athens, while the others took the ferry to Heraklion. From there, the large group split up into small groups, each following their own route. And yet we met again and again – by coincidence in the most wondrous places, in a pub, on a mountain path, on the beach. Each time was a great joy, each encounter a celebration. Stories were exchanged, experiences shared, new plans forged. Then the groups parted again, moved on or regrouped.

Everyone agreed that time passed far too quickly. On the day of departure, the entire group gathered at the airport in Athens, ready to return to Berlin. All of them – except for me. Because I had fallen in love with Crete's wild and romantic south coast. I had a bit of time and money, and the return flight in 1977 could still be rebooked free of charge. So, I stayed until the new semester started in mid-April.

Since then, every spring I've been overcome by Wanderlust like a slight fever. Something beckons, something drives me out. And off I go again to the island that stole my heart back then – and still hasn't given it back to me.
