December 2021

-  Day of Clouds  -

When I think in December about which motif of the calendar year that has almost passed probably means the most to me, I often focus very quickly on a single image. Usually it is the circumstances around the creation of a painting that continue to resonate within me.

This year it is ‘Day of Clouds’. I painted the picture in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a place in the south of France. Vincent van Gogh spent a year there from May 1889 to May 1890 in the abbey of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, a mental hospital. It was then that many of his most important paintings were created. My husband Klaus and I had admired the ‘Starry Night – La nuit étoilée’ extensively in the 'Museum of Modern Art' in New York. Now I was sitting on a rocky hill with an art card of this painting in my hand. Below me lay the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Glanum, and behind it rose from an olive grove the buildings of the abbey. In the distance, a tall pointed bell tower rose above the gables of the small town, and a long chain of irregular elevations lined the horizon. Cypress trees grew everywhere – and although no stars twinkled in the clear sky, I tried to recreate van Gogh's ‘Starry Night’ that day. Is it possible to copy another painter's stroke and unravel his feelings in the process? I dared the experiment and actually came a little closer to the great artist. He once sat on one of these hills and had, like me, the church tower of Saint-Rémy in view. It was unique how he reduced forms to the essentials without hesitation, created light, shadows and transitions with colour strokes, fathomed the depth of space and in doing so connected his emotions with reality. I could feel the tremendous power of his personal vision. It was new and strange to me, much stronger than anything I feel myself when painting. This insight is immediately present whenever I think of the circumstance around the creation of this painting.
