- Berlin Snow Ladies -

Although Berlin is located far to the north and east of Germany, it rarely snows here. And when it does, everyone goes crazy. Sledges are quickly dug out of the cellars, and parents flock with their small children to the city's slopes. In Neukölln's Hasenheide park, where piles of war rubble simulate a small hilly landscape, the so-called ‘soup bowl’ is perfect for sledging. On snowy days, the cheerful screeching of children can be heard here a hundred times over. The few metres of a fast descent, accompanied by a gentle fall into the soft snow, were always great fun for my three children. The winter season is short, so everyone should make the most of it and enjoy it in their own way.

When fresh snow falls at night, even adults quickly get caught up in the excitement. Snowballs are formed, thrown through the air or piled up and assembled into snowmen. On one of these special days, I discovered two funny snow matrons in front of a small boutique while on the way to buy bread rolls in the morning. Didn't they look like the 'Wilmersdorf widows' from the well-known Berlin youth theatre play "Line 1?" Right after breakfast, they became my models. I had to hurry while painting, because soon a red button rolled onto the pavement and the hats of the two were precariously tilted. Done!

In the afternoon, I wanted to visit my snow ladies again – but they no longer looked so upright and neatly dressed. Of course, the snow melted like butter in the sun. By evening, the boutique owner had collected the funny hats, green outfits and red buttons from her collection. Only two piles of snow, a carrot and a few green twigs remained as reminders of the two stately figures – and of the only day in December when we Berliners, young and old alike, were able to experience winter in all its white splendour.
