- Fighting the November Blues -

When I look at the bare branches of almost leafless trees in November, where only here and there a leaf still trembles defiantly in the wind; when the sky appears in its mouse-grey cloud dress, devoid of colour and sparkle, and even my usually imaginative thoughts resemble a dull rain puddle – then it sometimes catches me cold: the November blues. On days like these, I skulk through life without energy or desire.

And yet I actually quite like November. After all, my birthday is in the middle of this month – and ever since I was a child, I have known that a birthday party with family, relatives and friends can bring light and warmth even to the gloomiest of seasons. For me, celebrating my birthday means planning, organising, shopping, sprucing up the apartment, baking a cake – and on the day itself, lovely guests, good conversations, music, flowers, nice surprises and, of course, my friend Connie's traditional little buffet. The good mood lasts for quite a while after the party. Then I feel elated, as if the dark season is already over.

Rain and sleet showers, what are they? Wind and storms? Who cares! If it gets light late and dark early – so be it! And if the November blues catch up with me again, I light up my home, listen to Cape Verdean rhythms, bake homemade biscuits – or I seek out places that do me good: cafés with heart, people who are relaxed and friendly. Because right now, happiness lies in the small joys of everyday life.
