"I would like to organise a wellness trip to Turkey just for women," Ayten, the Turkish owner of the greengrocer's around the corner from us, speaking to me one day. "Would you like to join us?" Of course! The idea sounded far too tempting – to really relax and unwind. Why not go to Turkey? I'd never been there before. Surprisingly, our group remained quite small, there were only five of us – and each of us had a different idea of what we wanted to combine with this trip besides wellness. Ayten had family in Afyon and in a nearby village where we could stay overnight. We were also invited to other relatives' homes for dinner. Ingrid really wanted to see the Sufis dance in Konya. I wanted to get to know Cappadocia and, if possible, one of the mysterious underground cities. And the teenagers Asye and Xira were looking forward to the beach and a dip in the sea.

None of us had any idea that this trip would turn into a fun adventure when we landed in Ankara and began our journey across Turkey. From Ankara via Konya and Cappadocia down to Afyon and finally Olympos on the Mediterranean – who would have thought that this route would bring us so much fun and surprises? Most of the time we travelled in a comfortable overnight bus with cosy seats and good food. And all this within a week.

The dervishes didn't actually dance while we were in Konya and a day at the wellness hotel in Afyon with two hot spas and a massage was definitely too short. The changeable weather at the beginning of November meant that none of us felt like lying on the beach in Olympos. Nevertheless, the trip was simply exciting and unique. For me, Cappadocia and the underground city remain unforgettable: the light was soft and the cool autumn air smelled spicy. Surrounded by vines, I painted bizarre towers of tufa rock, slept at night in a man-made cave and, as I still remember well, dreamed of flying. For Xira and Asye, a long ride on fast horses was the highlight of the trip. For Ingrid it was certainly Konya and for Ayten the journey itself, which she had imagined to be completely different but now enjoyed to the full. For us women, every new impression was very simply – wellness for the soul.
