Every city in the world, if you don't already know it, is initially just a name – Lisboa. Some names sound as if the atmosphere there must be something special. When I finally get to know a place, the circumstances naturally play a major role in whether my positive preconceptions are confirmed. If the sun is shining, the accommodation is comfortable, the food and wine taste good, the people are friendly, the encounters are relaxed, my heart opens up to the city for all time. Later, it may rain and the sky could be grey – but that doesn't bother me anymore. Because once I've found the part of town where I like to spend time, I quickly feel at home.

In Lisboa, it's the Alfama neighbourhood with its winding alleyways below the castle. The multi-storey buildings are often grouped around a small square. White and blue ornamental tiles, known as azulejos, decorate some houses, often even the entire façade. Laundry dangles from the balconies on ropes, green plants and flowerbeds hang in front of the windows, pigeons coo from the roofs and cats doze on the steps. Small squares with fountains and benches, restaurants and tascas, the local taverns, characterise the picture. At lunchtime and in the evening, the smell of grilled sardines, chicken, meat and steamed cod fills the air. Nothing is more pleasant than sitting with a glass of red house wine – inside in the rain and outside in the sunshine. You are never alone, always surrounded by people. Some have time because they are old, others because they are young. Some because they have no work, others because they are already off work. People like to sit together to talk or to keep quiet. Sometimes someone plays the guitar, sometimes fado is sung.

It's always different watching a film about a city, hearing about life there, knowing facts and pictures – or being there yourself: right in the middle of where people live, go about their small business or simply spend time together. Cities, like people, change over time. Despite changing customs, a part of their unique character always remains. And be it the unforgettable melodiousness of its name: Lisboa.
