- May Green -

/2175-3920-thickbox/ruby.jpg

As early as April, when the first leaf buds burst open bing-bong, but especially in May, when all the trees and bushes glow in rich May green, I remember what makes the unique charm of nature in our latitudes. I love it when the joie de vivre manifests itself once again in colour. No wonder I love to paint trees in May.

'May green' is also the colour that belongs to the permanent assortment in my watercolour box. For me, it is the epitome of new beginnings and liveliness, regardless of the season. On the island of Savai'i, a small plant glowed in this colour towards us as we walked across a vast lava field with our friend Warren, an experienced volcanologist. It was the first sign of life on this bizarrely shaped, anthracite-black lava blanket, which some 120 years ago had oozed over the land to the sea, metres thick and glowing hot. After such a long time, finally the first tender green again! Warren's eyes shone with excitement. I felt just as moved and lucky years later at the sight of a single tree springing from the beige sea of sand. It was in the depths of the Abu Dhabi desert beside a water well, bearing both brown and May green leaves.

There are many reasons why 'May Green' is never missing from my watercolour box. I like the freshness and radiance of this colour. Just like this month itself – and not surprisingly, 'Lily of the Valley' is one of my customers' favourite motifs in the magnetic bookmarks. It's no coincidence that May is also called the 'merry month'. The winter clothes disappear into the wardrobe for good, the tables and chairs in front of the street cafés are always well occupied, the offspring jump and leap, flutter and chirp in nature. And some of us, who have been young for a few days longer, happily swinging and singing a little song to May.
