-  A Baltic Coast Beach Chair  -

My brother-in-law in Basthorst, Heinz, had a new achievement. A Baltic coast beach chair has recently been standing on his terrace, which immediately became his wife Dürte's favourite place. "You wouldn't believe how comfortable it is to sit here," enthused my sister-in-law during our last visit. "With or without the sea – it feels like a holiday. You should also get one for Berlin."

Our balcony is long and wide enough for a swinging hammock, but too narrow for a Baltic coast beach chair. But infected by Dürte's enthusiasm I felt like spending a day in a Baltic coast beach chair the next time I visited the Baltic Sea. Not for reading or dozing, but to paint a view of the sea from it.

I should have known it: a Baltic coast beach chair at Wustrow is quickly rented out in the summer. On my last day of holiday as well, I was late again. But in the afternoon, I was lucky and found a nice blue and white striped Baltic coast beach chair, unused and unlocked. Just the right place and time for a new picture. I made myself comfortable inside, unpacked the painting things, had quickly sketched all the lines and was just starting to paint the first few patches of colour, when suddenly a young family appeared in my field of vision.

"Hello there," said the father friendly, "I don't want to chase you away, but you are sitting in our Baltic coast beach chair. We've rented it all week, but are running a little late today." The little twins were already crawling to me on the bench, the older children helped the mother to distribute the toys in the sand. The young father noticed my disappointed look, thought for a moment. "Oh, just stay, if you don't mind the hustle and bustle here, and finish your painting," he suggested to me. That was the right thing to say. Yes, and of course I gladly accepted his generous offer and continued to paint, while the sandy area in front of me turned into a sand castle thanks to big and small hands.

In the meantime, my painting was finished and looking wonderful, a reason to celebrate. Just at the right time an ice-cream seller came by with a trolley with hot drinks in tow as well. I bought the children some ice cream and us adults some coffee, said goodbye to the nice family and walked along the beach to its more lonely parts. Even though I still prefer to spend the summer days stretched out in the sand under a parasol, a Baltic coast beach chair is a good invention. Shady, weatherproof and really cosy. If we had a garden in Berlin, I certainly couldn't resist this temptation.
