- Everything is in Motion -

A mild February evening. My husband and I were leaning against the railing of the ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera. An elegant two-masted ship was anchored in the harbour, gently rocking on the small waves. A quiet spectacle, a perfect motif. In a few minutes we would be setting sail. I looked at Klaus. He knew that look. If anything, it had to happen very quickly now. Lightning fast, even. There was hardly any time left: a few minutes perhaps, before the sun sank and the ferry left the harbour. "I'll give it a try," I said determinedly, already reaching for the painting bag in my rucksack. The paint box sprang open, the small water pot clicked into place, a sip of water in – and my little brush was already sweeping across the painting pad in my hand. I held my breath. Klaus did too. In front of us, the rocking ship, the sky in warm colours, the sun on its way to the horizon. Around us, the deep roar of the engines, voices, movement – a palpable restlessness: we were about to set off.

As the ferry slowly picked up speed, I stood still at the ship's rail. Only my eyes were moving, flying back and forth between the motif and the colours, while the brush restlessly found its way to the paper. Every second demanded decisions: this stroke, this spot – now or never. Then the sailing ship turned in the choppy water and the sun almost touched the horizon. My heart was beating faster, and Klaus also seemed uneasy. Would it turn out all right? And suddenly the tension eased. My features relaxed, a smile spread across my face. I lowered the paint box, turned to Klaus and held out the picture to him. Good? He nodded. A happy moment.

We stood at the ship's rail for a long time, watching as the harbour entrance grew smaller, the sailing boat disappeared and finally the whole island shrank into the twilight. The ferry now rocked from wave to wave, into the darkness, towards La Gomera.
