September 2024
Many people cultivate traditions. For their wedding anniversary, for example, they give each other flowers, go out for a meal together or, like my husband and I, go on a little ‘honeymoon’ every year. Sometimes he surprises me, sometimes I surprise him – and traditionally with a destination that was previously unknown to both of us. I then feel as curious and excited as a child before Christmas. Where will we be travelling to? It will definitely be within Germany, but I don't know the direction, nor do I know whether we're going to the countryside, the seaside or a city.
Last year, after a bit of confusion, I directed Klaus to East Frisia. Unfortunately, all the affordable accommodation on the islands was fully booked, so I took the advice of a friend and planned a variant of island hopping from the mainland. That worked out quite well. My only regret was that we didn't spend the night on Spiekeroog. I would have loved to have stretched out on one of the undulating concrete loungers there on that starry September night to look up at the sky and hope for shooting stars. Spiekeroog is one of the darkest places in Germany. At night, the lights on the island are radically reduced so that anyone who wants to can enjoy the Milky Way and lose themselves in the abundance of shining stars. But there was no place to stay overnight, even for the spontaneous. So, inspired by a postcard, I painted the Spiekeroog ‘Utkieker’ as a stargazer.
Looking at my painting, I already have an idea for our next destination. But now I'm curious to see where we'll go this year, because it's September again and our wedding anniversary is approaching.
