- View from Fernanda's Apartment -

For many years, a coastal town in the south of Portugal has been a second home to me. Since 1992, I have spent several weeks there every year in Fernanda's apartment – with my husband Klaus, sometimes with the whole family, in the past with female friends or even alone. I prefer the two small rooms on the top floor to all other accommodation in our holiday resort. Is it because of the beautiful light or the quiet location? Above all, I enjoy the fact that my gaze can wander from the neighbours' small backyard over the walls, facades and roofs of the houses, up the hillside to the mill – and on into the sky-blue of the day or the blue-black of the night.

Sometimes it is the moon, sometimes the clouds, sometimes the wheel of the mill in the wind that I am looking at. The air smells so beautifully of the sea, nature and the season. When the crowing roosters wake me up again, I pull up a chair to the window and look out. How about a new picture, Marion? Most of the time I just watch the cats, birds, villagers or holidaymakers who are still or already awake again. A door squeaks, a suitcase rattles across the pavement, a motor starts up somewhere. Later, there's more to see, because the place quickly comes to life. I love the view from this window. Over all the years, despite many changes, it has remained unspoilt and almost the same. No more laundry flutters in the backyard. Cats snooze there now under overgrown rose bushes, while kittens learn to climb on a pile of roof tiles.

Every year I fear for my little idyll, but fortunately so far without any reason.
