- In the Schlosspark -

Summer Holidays 1979. When all my friends were away in the summer and I was left alone in Berlin, I spent a lot of time with Charly, a little black poodle. Every day I picked up the funny guy from my neighbours to take him for a walk in the park of the nearby Charlottenburg Palace. After many hours in the university library, I looked forward to time in the green just like he did. The French-style baroque garden is adjoined by a spacious English garden and the 'wild' lawn at the little garden lodge, called Belvedere or Teahouse, was my favourite destination. In the shade of the old deciduous trees with a view of the red arched bridge, where the back façade of the castle is reflected in the water of the large pond, it was particularly easy to forget the big city. Others were also lying on blankets, browsing through their books or university scripts. Some sat in small groups or in a circle. People chatted, smoked, listened to music from portable box radios with cassette decks, played the flute, chess or badminton. Children crawled through the grass, romped across the meadow or played gymnastics in the trees. Adults dozed in the afternoon sun, did yoga exercises and were already knitting jumpers for next winter. I liked to lie there on my back with my arms folded under my head and just look up at the sky. Berlin was a walled city at the time, but in the Schlosspark I found the expansive view I longed for.

Even though the meadow by the Teahouse belongs to the summer with Charly and another phase of my life, it is still one of my favourite places.
