- The Dove of Peace in Odeceixe -

/1684-2953-thickbox/fruhlingszauber-2.jpg

My favourite place, Odeceixe, is in the south of Portugal. I love the sea, the landscape, the people and their lovely nature there. It is best symbolised by the dark oval slates with a dove of peace that once adorned many house walls and gave me a very positive impression of the place and its inhabitants from the very first moment. Even today, the dove of peace can be spotted here and there. Pablo Picasso once painted it again and again. At first photographically accurate, later he only hinted at the wings and feathers. From five or six strokes, the dove with a green branch was created with pastel chalk. It is precisely this silhouette of a dove that is still considered a symbol of peace today.

Who actually created the little works of art in Odeceixe back then? Everyone I ask associates a different person as being the creator. Were they the work of Amílca or his girlfriend, whose name I don't know? Or his brother António? Were they created collaboratively? I painted 'my' stone slab in the garden of my good friend Roswitha, where António Jesus had placed it on a wall. It is not natural like the others, but painted white and has a green olive branch in its beak.

All men are created equal in their rights. All people have the right to live in peace. Peace is an inalienable human right. Fly now, little dove, and carry your message out into the world.
