- Magic Dwells in Every Beginning -

I love every new beginning and especially the moment when, traditionally at the start of the year, I open my watercolour box, newly stocked with 48 colours, and the colours shine out at me, untouched. Every year I choose a few untested colours from the variety of shades in addition to the tried and tested ones. Colours have their own character – and I enjoy getting to know their traits over time.

This painting of my watercolour box was made in January 2020. Should I perhaps depict a flower on the painting pad? No, I decided, and left it with my abbreviation "MJB '20." In January, the new year was still so fresh and promising, I wanted to pay homage to my dreams for 2020.

My fascination with first moments runs through many areas of life. As with the brand new paint box, it is the same with new notebooks when the scent of fresh paper hits me. Or when I trudge through fresh snow with a crunch. Or when I set foot in a foreign country for the first time. Or when the second hand of the clock crosses midnight and a new year begins.

Magic Dwells in Every Beginning. And with every first brushstroke the anticipation of painting and the hope of a successful picture.
