-  Meeting at the Market  -

My motifs from all over the world get me into conversation with the customers at my market stall. "Do you know what I love most about the markets in Portugal?" an extremely nice man told me recently, "They are meeting places with a very practical value. People stock up on household goods, linen, clothes and shoes. If you need a lucky cowbell, you can get it there. If you need cheese, wine or olive oil, you have ample choice. I always buy my fruit and vegetables at the market at home, too. But in Portugal, visitors don't just bring money, but also a lot of time, which is what I like most there." My customer was right. I too have only good memories of the markets in Portugal. People come from all around, it's always crowded, people greet each other, laugh and hug. At lunchtime, everyone sits on long benches, eats grilled chicken and shares news. What would the country be without these meeting places, what would a holiday be without a visit to the market?

In Germany, I even know both sides of the market stall – as a craftswoman and as a customer. When my husband and I travel through the country, setting up base camp one weekend in Warnemünde, the next in Husum and the one after that on the Darß or somewhere else, I also like to stroll from one stall to the next to discover something beautiful, unusual, never-seen-before as a souvenir. Here I sniff, there I taste, there I try on and get advice. I am almost as happy to stand behind my stand to inform or chat with my customers about art and life. "All the magnetic bookmarks are handmade, all the motifs I painted on the spot. Here is my main collection, over there you can see my treasure chests". People can get really excited about my paintings – and what stimulates my creativity more than this positive response? Even though tending a stall is very exhausting, we enjoy having the end of the day in our sights, especially on the coast, where it always feels like a holiday.
