- Carnival of Cultures -

/514-659-thickbox/karneval-der-kulturen.jpgBerlin, you wonderful, multi-faceted city. Original Berliners, Berliners by choice and visitors from all over the world love and appreciate the informal coexistence and cultural life here, which has something to offer for everyone. My personal highlight is the ‘Carnival of Cultures', a festival that has been celebrated every year at Whitsun in Kreuzberg since 1996. It is a festival of the senses, full of colours and sounds, in which thousands of people from different cultures, musicians and dancers of all styles take part. During the street parade, they present their traditional and imaginative costumes and attest to their artistry and expressiveness. The streets are filled with drum rhythms, the sound of bagpipes and singing, while the spectators follow the procession spellbound.

The special thing for us is that the procession passes almost directly by our house, so we are right in the middle of the action. The fun lasts several days and is accompanied by a festival with world and scene music on several stages.

At one point, I felt like capturing the colourful hustle and bustle. With my watercolour box on my arm, I walked past the waiting groups before the parade began and captured the atmosphere on my paper. It was fun and I felt like I was a participant in our multicultural carnival. Every year, the positive energy of the festival creates a bond that lasts for a long time. Because what is often not so obvious in everyday life in Berlin is that our city is simply fun-loving, colourful and sexy.
