- The Prerow Lighthouse -

I love the coast, the cliffs and surf, the dunes, the beach. Sometimes the blue of the sky and the sea shines bright and clear, sometimes it shimmers deep, the clouds and waves gently sway or move along in bright turmoil, the sun heats me up, the wind drives me and my feet sink so beautifully into the sand when I walk. I like the salty air, the aromatic scent, I like driftwood, shells, wet shimmering rocks. And lighthouses. Above all, when you can climb them and look out over land and water from a great height.

In recent years, my husband Klaus and I worked at many 'handicraft markets' on the Baltic and North Sea coast. From April to October, week after week, we move from one coastal town to another. When my time allowed and the weather cooperated, I painted local lighthouses. Each one of them has its own unique feature. It could be the location, the construction or its history. Sometimes I take a boat or a bicycle to reach it. Sit in the dunes or in the grass, between sea buckthorn hedges or on a little wall and paint. The sun can crack and the wind can really blow. The main thing is that it doesn't rain. If, as in Prerow, there is a small café attached to the lighthouse, I like to return there with Klaus to tell him a few sailor’s yarns about my latest painting adventure over coffee and cake. It's even possible to spend the night in lighthouses, and maybe we'll do that soon when we're back up on the coast. Waking up with a 360-degree view, that would almost be seafaring romance. High spirits included!
