- Favourite Colour Rainbow -

Rainbows are the most enchanting natural phenomenon I know. They appear in the sky when jet-black rain clouds are on the move and the sun comes out.

I painted one over the Strait of Magellan in Patagonia, another in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand, the third on the Canary Island of El Hierro and the fourth a few years ago near Hamburg. That's not often, because rarely when it rains do I have my painting supplies handy or am I quick enough to capture it before it fades.

I am not the only one fascinated by the colourful half Ferris wheel. "Look, a rainbow": It appeals to people when it appears in the sky. A joyful sight – and a sign behind which many stories are hidden: At the end of the rainbow we meet again – or find happiness. "Unfortunately I wasn't fast enough, but now at least I know where to dig for the treasure," landscape and nature photographer Carsten Jensen once commented on his photo of a rainbow over the Baltic Sea.

Since Noah's Ark, this colourful, life-affirming natural phenomenon has become a powerful symbol. People perceive rainbows as something bigger than themselves – and as a sign of hope, departure, change. They stand for diversity, for a rich, colourful life, and they are my favourite colour. Because there is no black or white here – and no brown either. Combined with the most important word of humanity 'Frieden-Peace-Paix-Salam-Shalom-Hépíng-Heiwa-Mir' the rainbow colours symbolise a peaceful community of us all. Without colours and without peace, the world is a bleak, horrible place. In this I certainly agree with all people who, like me, can also see in this natural phenomenon a symbol for the values of global togetherness.
